Controller care and stick drift
Drift and sticky buttons show up on stream before you notice them in game. Measure first, clean second, and know when a controller has reached the end of its life.
The short version
- Stick drift comes from wear and dust in the stick mechanism. Sticky buttons come from dirt under the button.
- Measure before you act: the stick drift test gives you a number to compare after each fix.
- Dead zones hide drift, they do not repair it. A worn stick keeps getting worse.
Why do sticks drift and buttons stick?
- Wear. Most sticks measure their position with small sensors that rub as you play. Over time, they stop returning a clean center value.
- Dust and debris. Dirt inside the stick base shifts the reading, especially on controllers used for years.
- Sticky buttons. Drinks, skin oils and crumbs under a button slow its return or keep it pressed.
How do I measure drift?
Open the stick drift test, leave both sticks at rest and read the drift value, then turn them in full circles to check their range. Note the numbers: they tell you whether a fix worked. For buttons, the gamepad tester highlights any input that stays active when you are not touching it.
How do I clean a controller without damaging it?
- Turn it off and unplug it.
- Sticks: blow short bursts of compressed air around the base of each stick while you rotate it in circles.
- Buttons: wipe around the edges with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, then press the button repeatedly. Never pour liquid into the controller.
- Let it dry a few minutes, then measure again.
Before you open it
Opening the shell usually voids the manufacturer warranty. If your controller is still covered, contact the manufacturer first.
Can calibration or dead zones fix drift?
- Calibration. Some controllers can be recalibrated in Windows, through Set up USB game controllers, or with the manufacturer's app. It helps when the center is off, not when the stick is worn.
- Dead zones in your game. Raising the dead zone makes the game ignore small movements near the center. It hides light drift at the cost of precision.
- Dead zones on your overlay. Your link settings can hide drift on stream. They change the picture only, not what the game receives.
When should I repair or replace my controller?
- Under warranty: use it. Drift is a common warranty claim.
- Drift that comes back after cleaning, or grows every week: the stick is worn. A repair shop can replace the stick module.
- Buying a new one: controllers with Hall effect sticks measure position with magnets instead of rubbing contacts, and are far less prone to drift.
Anything specific to my controller?
- DualSense (PS5): drift is a common complaint over time. The DualSense Edge has stick modules you can replace yourself without opening the controller.
- Xbox Elite Series 2: swappable magnetic thumbsticks and adjustable stick tension, which changes the feel but does not cure a worn stick.
- Hall effect controllers such as the 8BitDo Ultimate and the GameSir G7 SE measure the sticks with magnets and are much less prone to drift.
How do I make a controller last longer?
- Store it in a drawer or a case: dust settles in the stick base when it sits in the open.
- Keep food and drinks away from the desk while you play.
- Avoid grinding the sticks into their rim: full circles are fine, constant pressure on the edge wears the mechanism faster.
- Measure your sticks every few months with the stick drift test, so you notice drift before your viewers do.
