Controller not detected
Check each layer between your controller and the overlay, in order. Each check takes a minute, and the first one fixes most cases.
The overlay only sees what the computer running OBS sees. Your controller goes through several layers before it gets there: the connection, Windows, any app that remaps it, then the browser. Start at the top and stop at the first check that fails.
Did you press a button?
Browsers only expose a controller after a first input. Plug the controller in, open the overlay, then press any button. In OBS, if the Browser Source stays empty, open its properties, click Refresh cache of current page and press a button again.
Is the connection working?
- USB cable. Some cables only charge. Use the one that came with the controller or another cable known to carry data, and plug it straight into the PC, not into a hub or a monitor port.
- Bluetooth. Pair the controller with the PC. A controller connects to one device at a time: if it wakes your console, it is not talking to the PC.
- Wireless adapter. Make sure the adapter is plugged in and the controller is paired with it, not with Bluetooth.
- Battery. A low battery drops the connection without warning. Test with a cable.
The overlay reads the controller connected to the computer running OBS. A controller paired with a PS5 or an Xbox is invisible to that computer, so the overlay cannot show it.
Does Windows see it?
Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If it reacts, the controller and Windows are fine: the problem is in OBS or in the overlay link. If it does not, open Settings, Bluetooth and devices to check that the controller is connected, or search Windows for Set up USB game controllers to see whether it is listed.
Is another app taking over?
Remapping tools can hide the real controller or replace it with a virtual one. Only one of them should handle the controller at a time.
- Steam. With Steam Input on, Steam can take over the controller. Close Steam or turn off Steam Input for your controller type, then test again.
- DS4Windows and HidHide. HidHide hides the real DualShock or DualSense from other apps. Add OBS and your browser to its allowed apps, or let the overlay read the virtual Xbox controller instead.
- reWASD, DSX and similar tools. Turn them off to test. If the overlay comes back, adjust their settings rather than running them blind.
Is the game involved?
Most games share the controller with other apps, so the overlay keeps working while you play. A game launched through Steam with Steam Input on, or a launcher that remaps inputs, can change what other apps receive. Test with the game closed: if the overlay works, then stops when the game starts, launch the game with Steam Input off for that title and try again.

How do I pair my controller with the PC?
- DualSense (PS5): hold the PS button and the Create button until the light bar flashes, then pair it in Windows Bluetooth settings. By cable, use a USB-C cable that carries data.
- DualShock 4 (PS4): hold the PS button and the Share button until the light bar flashes, then pair it.
- Xbox Wireless Controller: hold the pair button on top until the Xbox button flashes quickly, then pair it. The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows works too.
- Switch Pro: press the small sync button next to the USB-C port, then pair it with Steam closed.
- 8BitDo and multi-mode controllers: start them in X-input mode, see Wrong buttons on the overlay.
A wireless adapter plugged into a USB 3 port, or hidden behind the PC case, can lose signal. A short USB extension that brings the adapter onto your desk often fixes random drops.
